Disclosure: We buy, test, analyze and then present our findings of a VPN service.
What can I say about Surfshark while testing? It’s a phenomenal VPN service. Even though during the Surfshark review, this VPN service is relatively new in the industry, they’ve definitely made a name for themselves.
I didn’t think it would turn out to be such a good VPN service. I mean they only have a couple of hundred servers at max.
However, after using it for a week straight, I was blown away by the streaming speed of 9.5Mbps and how good it was with its 1700+ servers and that even at an economical price i.e $1.99/m. Netflix worked like a charm and so did Torrenting which ended up at 3.01 Mbps downloading speed on the Canadian server.
Oh yeah, the apps also worked great and It also passed my IP leak tests without a hitch. Overall their service is on par with big contenders like ExpressVPN and NordVPN. That said, in this SurfShark VPN review 2020, I’m going to talk all about Surfshark VPN, what it has to offer and why it has been shortlisted as among the best VPNs and why should get it right away.
Is Surfshark VPN a good value for money?
Even though Surfshark offers all the fancy bells and whistles you find in more premium VPN services, their prices are unbelievably affordable.
Surfshark offers three plans, 1 month, 24 months and 12 months plan. Their 1-month plan isn’t all that special and costs a standard price of $11.95, but nonetheless, Surfshark 7 day free trial is also available to make your choice concrete.
Their 24 months plan definitely offers the best value for money. It not only comes with an 83% discount but also comes at the cheapest price of $1.99. That’s the lowest in the entire industry.
That’s not all, their 12 months plan also comes with a staggering 50% discount and only costs a mere $5.99 a month.
Here is the current pricing plan of Surfshark:
Surfshark User reviews
Although Surfshark has gotten quite famous in the last few months, people still don’t know much about it.
Even though I’m totally sold over their service, I still decided to check out Surfshark review Reddit to see what other user think about this service.
I found one Reddit comment that never even heard of Surfshark.
Another Reddit user by the name of GumboBenoit was reluctant to try out the service because of it being relatively new.
I found another thread that talked about speed drops in Surfshark VPN review of 2020.
Surfshark review based on Reddit
Aside from the comments mentioned above, I found a few positive comments about Surfshark over at Reddit.
One Reddit user by the username mad4stream admired Surfshark’s low prices, fast speeds, and Netflix unblocking capabilities.
Surfshark In-depth review
Now I’m going to talk about all the features which have to be mentioned in review Surfshark VPN, its data logging policy, customer support, speeds, and device compatibility.
Let’s begin with speeds and servers, shall we?
Speeds and server network
Let’s talk about their servers first. At the moment their server park isn’t as massive as some of the other VPN giants in the industry. They offer 1700+ servers in 63+ countries around the world.
This isn’t much but it’s definitely not less either. I also like the fact that they’ve strategically placed their servers to cover as much ground as possible. They offer multiple servers in Europe, The Americas, Asia Pacific, and The Middle East. Even though Surfshark offers comparatively fewer servers, it still has an edge over its competitors.
Well because they offer faster speeds thanks to their servers being new and less crowded. Surfshark has 1700+ servers in 63+ countries.
Now let’s talk about real-world speeds.
Surfshark VPN speed review managed to offer pretty amazing speeds. For this review, I tested the ping, upload and download speeds of Surfshark using my 12 Mbps office internet connection.
I know it’s not much but it’s perfect for the review. To keep things concise, I tested the speeds on the following server locations:
U.S server (Miami, FL)
The U.S server of Surfshark offered phenomenal speeds. It never felt like I was even connected to a VPN server. After connecting to the Miami, FL server, I only noticed a slight drop in my original speeds.
Take a look at the screenshot below.
U.K server (London)
The London severs also managed to offer pretty impressive speeds. That said, the speed drop was a bit more than the U.S server. However, it’s not a deal-breaker.
Check out the screenshot below.
Canada server (Toronto, ON)
The Canadian server of Surfshark also didn’t disappoint me. It also managed to offer noteworthy download and upload speeds.
Surfshark Data logging policy
Surfshark offers a strict no data logging policy. They’re headquartered in the British Virgin Islands so they technically don’t have to abide by data retention laws. On paper this sounds satisfying, however, a lot of VPN providers nowadays falsify this claim.
- IP addresses
- browsing history
- session information
- used bandwidth
- connection timestamps
- network traffic and other similar data
Aside from that, Surfshark stores Diagnostic data for product improvement. This is pretty standard and most app developers ask for this information anyways.
For further reassurance, I also checked out their FAQ page. They clearly state what information they don’t collect.
- Incoming and outgoing IP addresses
- Browsing, downloading or purchasing history
- VPN servers you use
- Used bandwidth
- Session information
- Connection timestamps
- Network traffic
OverallI’m highly impressed by the level of transparency that Surfshark offers.
Devices, OS and Apps supported
Compatibility wise Surfshark is rather diverse. You basically get support for all mainstream mobile and desktop platforms. Chrome, Firefox, Android, iOS, Windows, Mac OS, and Linux are all compatible with Surfshark.
Other than the above-mentioned platforms, Surfshark is also compatible with Amazon Fire TV. That said, what you won’t find is the native apps for other devices such as routers, casting devices, and even gaming consoles.
However, you can still protect these devices by configuring the Surfshark VPN on your router. As I said, there isn’t a dedicated Surfshark app for routers so you’ll have to manually set it up.
Don’t worry though there is a tutorial available on their website. The only thing is, you do need a router that supports OpenVPN protocol or DD-WRT/Tomato firmware in order to setup Surfshark VPN on it.
Overall I think they should consider adding support for other devices to their apps repertoire.
Surfshark offers the best customer support I’ve seen in a really long time.
With other VPN providers, you typically either have to face sluggish live chat support or have to wait for days to get a response via email ticketing. However, with Surfshark, I didn’t experience both of it. Their support representatives weren’t just quick they also knew what they were actually talking about.
Here a screenshot of a quick chat I had with their customer support:
I loved how polite their customer representative was. Overall, I’m highly pleased with Surfshark’s customer support.
Technical security features review of Surfshark
Security-wise Surfshark is pretty well equipped. Even as a small VPN provider, they still offer top of the line encryption and privacy features.
Speaking of features, Military-grade 256-bit encryption is standard in every subscription plan of Surfshark and so is Zero-knowledge DNS. They also offer a nifty kill switch to keep your identity totally secure.
One thing I really found interesting in Surfshark is their Multihop technology. This is a feature we’re used to seeing in top VPN providers. It’s nice to see Surfshark including this feature in such a budget VPN.
Surfshark also offers industry benchmark encryption protocols such as IKEv2 and even the mighty OpenVPN. It seriously doesn’t get better than this. Aside from offering cutting edge privacy features, Surfshark also offers an extra value-added feature called “CleanWeb”. Basically, this feature blocks unwanted ads, trackers and even malware threats.
Overall, I’m highly impressed by the level of features that are included in Surfshark.
So, do I recommend Surfshark? Absolutely!
They might not have been in the industry for too long but they’ve certainly created a name for themselves.
Well their features are on par with industry giants, they easily unblock all major streaming services and they certainly don’t log user data. That’s the perfect recipe for a premium VPN service.
The only thing they need to improve right now is their server park. 1040+ server isn’t enough to compete with industry leaders. They also need to add support for other devices as well.
